This oceanside park offers stunning views, the chance to get up close to Maine’s oldest lighthouse, and paved paths for strolling near the shore.

Fort Williams Park, home to the oldest lighthouse in Maine, is about as picture-postcard perfect as it gets. Don’t forget to bring your camera! Ocean views, historic properties, and plenty of paved paths, swings, picnic tables, and cooking grills make for a perfect outing for families.
Fort Williams was once a military asset during World War II, protecting the shoreline of Cape Elizabeth. It was officially closed and deactivated in 1963. Portland Head Light, the centerpiece of the park, has a museum and gift shop.
The park has views of Ram Island Ledge Light and the islands of Casco Bay as well as playing fields and tennis courts. The paved paths are great for bicylcles. In winter, the park offers great places to cross-country ski or sled.
Remember: The museum—which has a number of lighthouse lenses and interpretive displays—is open seasonally with limited hours. Call or visit its website for details.
Plan B:Head into Portland and wander around the historic Old Port section of town.
Where to Eat Nearby:Cottage Road offers a variety of ice cream shops and pizza places.
