Giant boulders, perfect for climbing, will entice kids on this short hike in the woods.

It’s always fun to have a good story to go along with a hike, and King Philip’s Rock and Cave offer more than just one. First, an Eagle Scout built the bulletin board shelter at the entrance on Mansfield Street as a service project, and Boy Scouts help maintain the trails.
The history of the rock and cave is a little mysterious. The site is thought to be an American Indian meeting place and is named for the Wampanoag leader Metacomet (also known as King Philip). American Indians might have met here to plan strategy during King Philip’s War (1675–76). Some people surmise that ancient peoples observed the solstices and made other astronomical observations from the large rock formation now called King Philip’s Rock.
Whatever the case, kids will love the easy hike to the large rocks formed by receding glaciers long ago. Trails extend from Sharon into Foxborough conservation land and entice bikers and cross-country skiers with wide, relatively flat paths. Start your hike by visiting the cave, then loop around to the rock. If you want an abbreviated hike, take only the 0.25-mile trail to the rock.
Remember: At the Mansfield parking area, you are between two houses. Be respectful of the neighbors.
Plan B:At Borderland State Park you can hike, fish, paddle, iceskate, and sled.
Where to Eat Nearby:Restaurants are in Sharon, where MA 27 crosses Main Street.
