A fun way to explore this Trustees of Reservations property with kids is by doing the Rooms in Time quest (available at the information box at the parking lot). Rhyming clues and a map lead to a hidden treasure box and tell the story of Moose Hill Farm, which served as an agricultural site as early as the 1600s. The farm was the Kendall family estate for generations. At one point, fields were cleared by ox, then were home to sheep and, later, dairy cows. The quest takes a little over an hour and covers the entire property.

Today as you hike about, you’ll see evidence of the property’s past—cellar holes, stone walls, and open fields. Many of the trails link to the adjacent Mass Audubon Moose Hill Sanctuary. From the parking lot, take Old Farm Trail (red blazes). You’ll see a sign directing you to branch off to the left to get to the Moose Hill fire tower, where the elevation is 466 feet. If you stay on Old Farm Trail, it will lead to hillside hay fields for the great view of Boston. Visit when snow covers the ground and you’ll find peaceful snowshoeing opportunities.

If you’re lucky, you might see wild turkeys and white-tailed deer, which feed on the few American chestnut trees present here. This tree, once ubiquitous in the east, was nearly wiped out by a black fungus blight, which began in the early 1900s.
