A cart path trail at this former farm on the Charles River offers a lovely scenic walk. Afterward, paddle your canoe or kayak along the river.

A 1-mile hike along a cart path by the Charles River leads through an oak pine forest.

The Baker family operated a small farm here on the Charles River through the mid-twentieth century and donated the land to The Trustees of Reservations in 2004. Today, you can take a leisurely stroll on a 1-mile trail that takes you through meadows and an oak pine forest. While the forest is mostly pine, some cedar trees are on the property as well, which may be why the Bakers named it Cedariver. Bring a picnic; if you take a short detour on the loop about halfway around the trail, you can enjoy lunch at a picnic table right on the river.

But the best way to enjoy this area might be by canoeing down the Charles River. Far from the busy sections of riverfront in Boston, this quiet area will give you a different perspective of the Charles. The Department of Conservation and Recreation has a boat landing across the street where you can launch canoes and kayaks. In winter, you can go sledding on a hill that overlooks the river.

Remember: A couple of private residences are on the property, so respect the owners’ privacy and stay on the trail. Keep your dog on a leash and clean up after it.

Plan B:

Rocky Narrows (Trip 46), another Trustees of Reservations property, is 20 minutes away in Sherborn, and has an extensive trail system with longer hikes.

Where to Eat Nearby:

Medfield Center, on and around MA 109, has a few restaurants.
