The southern section of Rocky Narrows offers easy trails and short loops perfect for younger hikers.

Rocky Narrows has several different trails to explore, and the Bay Circuit Trail passes through the reservation. The southern section, a 77-acre parcel of land, is part of the 249-acre property but is separated from the rest of the reservation by an active railroad track. This section doesn’t allow access to the Rocky Narrows Overlook or King Philip’s Overlook, which you may have heard of and are certainly worth visiting, but this area offers its own charms and is easier than the northern section for younger kids.
White Trail, which you’ll find at the end of the parking lot, is the only blazed trail here and takes you through woodlands and wetlands on a fairly easy path. We had fun on one visit counting the tiny brown frogs that seemed to be everywhere that day and seeing who could spot the most. Eventually you get to a split at Marker 1; you can choose to go right on a path that leads to the tracks and back, or you can go to the left for a shorter loop trail, with a couple of spurs to make it even shorter. This is also a great trail for when you don’t have a lot of time but want to get the kids out to stretch their legs. It’s also perfect for a short snowshoe trek.
Remember: It’s illegal to cross the railroad tracks. If you hike by them, stay on your own side.
Plan B:For a very different and more challenging hike, go to the northern section of Rocky Narrows. Paddling is also available there.
Where to Eat Nearby:Places to dine are in Sherborn along MA 27, north of the reservation.
