With 15 miles of trails and a beautiful new visitor's center in the refuge, it's easy to find something to suit kid's interests.

With 15 miles of trails and a beautiful new visitor's center in the refuge, it's easy to find something to suit kid's interests. The refuge also provides educational programming for kids!

Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 3.5 square miles located within the towns of Hudson, Maynard, Stow and Sudbury. Formerly part of Fort Devens, this area was known as the Sudbury Training Annex. Bunkers and old rail lines can still be found alongside the trails today.

The refuge has a large wetland complex, several smaller wetlands and vernal pools, and large forested areas which are important feeding and breeding areas for birds and other wildlife. At the visitor center you will see local wildlife in the exhibit hall and visit the nature store. Go fishing or stop by for a scenic spot of Puffer pond at the fishing dock on Puffer Pond trail. For birding or for beautiful sights make sure to hike Otter Alley and go down Winterberry Way.

Plan B:

Go check out the exhibits at the visitor's center.

Where to Eat Nearby:

Head into Maynard's downtown for lots of options for places to eat.
