Great Blue Heron Nest Colony

A great opportunity to view wildlife in wetlands. The entrance on Cutler Farms is definitely odd, but fun in its way. An easement alongside a private home gives the public access to the reservation's trails. Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) trail markers help you find your way between the manicured lawn and a small wetland to the reservation. From the easement, take a short trail over several ditches and a stream or two to the Allowance Brook's edge. From the trail, you can see a colony of Great Blue Herons nests, as well as a muskrat push up. If you're quiet and still, you can see the muskrats themselves! I visited in early spring, and it was a very squishy, muddy walk with plenty of large puddles! I would probably not bring kids in summer, because wetlands tend to be buggy. This is a walk that would be best for older children. Before going, I might preview with kids the importance of respecting wildlife by keeping quiet and still. (I'm sure the neighbors' whose house borders the easement would appreciate it too!)

Plan B:

On Route 20, there are several eateries, coffee shops, and a playground

Where to Eat Nearby:

There's a Starbucks on Route 20
