This is a flat, dry trail within the City of Portland, but feels like you are miles away from any city. The trail goes across an open wetland marsh, and along and across a small river, allowing expansive views of birds and waterfowl. My 2-year-old loves throwing small rocks off the bridge into the water (the bridge is very kid-safe) and seeing small fish swimming in tidal pools. It is great with him in a backpack, but also good for him to walk on his own.

Plan B:

Watch airplanes at the Portland Jetport, Portland Children's Museum

Where to Eat Nearby:

Local Sprouts, with a kids play area: http://www.localsproutscooperative.com/cafe
