This hike is 1 hour's drive (48 mi) from NYC, has a great mix of steep "staircase" and gradual segments along 2.6 mi trail. Hiking along AT and Camp Smith trails leads to overlook with fantastic views of the Hudson River, hawks flying overhead. Fun for both older and younger kids -fits easily into 1/2 day adventure, as morning or afternoon hike. Great to do this hike with family dog.

Plan B:

Where to Eat Nearby:

Great restaurants in Cold Spring, a few miles north of AT trailhead, on eastern side of Hudson River.
