Blackwater Canyon Trail in Monongahela National Forest

Date and Time

Saturday, June 26, 2021, 9:00AM - 4:45PM

Hendricks, West Virginia,
West Virginia,
WV United States

Registration is required for this activity.

Approximately twenty miles in length on packed dirt and gravel, this ride curves along Blackwater River and its North Branch in Blackwater Falls State Park. There are great views of both the river and the mountains on both sides of the canyon. The first ten miles will be UPHILL on a rail grade, and the second ten miles will be DOWNHILL on the same path. As we will have plenty of time to complete this ride, I want us "to smell the flowers" together rather than see the area with blurred vision. There are hyperlinks below relative to more information and maps about the path. For those driving longer distances and wanting to go hiking in the area, there are wonderful hikes in other parts of Blackwater Falls State Park as well as in nearby national forests. For examples, Blackwater Falls itself as well as the Elakala to Yellow Birch Trail Loop. Please bring along a sack lunch to be enjoyed along the trail ride or in Thomas, the small town at the midpoint of the ride. REQUIRED ITEMS: (1) extra tube, (2) bike tools, (3) pump, and (4) helmet. RECOMMEND: The Ten Essentials. Although CDC and state guidelines are in flux, it is a requirement that you bring hand sanitizer and a mask to be used as directed by the activity leader. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, using my phone number or email address.

On my second membership tour with AMC, I'm bringing climbing, backpacking/hiking and biking experience from The Mountaineers in Seattle, the AMC in Philadelphia, the Northern Virginia Hiking Club, and Den danske Vandreklub in Copenhagen. I have both led and followed on club and much more numerous personal trips. My backpacking/hiking and biking experience has mostly been on the west and the east coasts of the U.S. and in northern Europe and South America.

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

Tip of the Day

Follow your child’s lead. Just head outside and see what interests you. With no agenda, you may discover new games, like lining up pinecones on a log or racing the wind.
