Outstanding rock-climbing cliffs, more than 100 miles of hiking trails covering diverse terrain (including 27 miles of the Appalachian Trail), campgrounds, and one mighty river are what you’ll find in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The area spans more than 100 square miles in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and is home to several state parks and forest preserves.

Within this, Worthington State Forest has a number of New Jersey’s most popular trails and birding sites, as well as the only public campsites in the water gap. The campground, with 69 tent and trailer sites, stretches for 2 miles along the Delaware River, and includes playgrounds and an interpretative area, as well restrooms and showers.

Worthington’s Van Campens Glen is one relatively challenging hike that prepares kids for more rugged trails and longer distances. The trailhead lies a quarter-mile from Millbrook Village, an outdoor museum where you can experience what life in New Jersey was like during the nineteenth century.

From the parking lot in Millbrook Village, follow the footpath leading between the hotel and the general store. Turn right across Millbrook Road, continuing past the church on your left and Sylvester Hill House on the right. After about a quarter-mile you will arrive at Millbrook School. Continue along the path past two ponds. You will arrive at a third, larger pond, at the Watergate Recreation Site picnic area, where the trail begins.

Take the wooden bridge across the stream and follow the trail. After 1.4 miles you will cross an asphalt road, and at 1.8 miles you will arrive at the starting point for the yellow-blazed trail. Follow the trail off to the right. The path is rocky, intersected by tree roots, and at points requires easy climbing where the trail is somewhat steep. (It is not suitable for strollers, and would be awkward for parents wearing a baby carrier.) After 0.2 mile you will arrive at Van Campens Brook. Follow the trail left along the stream to the falls. After 2.5 miles you will cross another footbridge. Turn left past another set of falls at 2.75 miles before you arrive back in the Van Campens Glen parking lot.

Remember: The trail can be slippery after rainfall.

Plan B:

If you would prefer a more challenging hike, try the Rattlesnake Swamp Trail (Trip 94). A less challenging hike is Dunnfield Creek Falls (Trip 93).

Where to Eat Nearby:

It’s best to pack a picnic, and the Watergate Recreation Site is a good spot to enjoy it.
