Overview

This 4 mile circuit hike descends from Fisher Gap Overlook to a 67' waterfall with additional cascades beyond along the trail. This hike has 910' of elevation gain. This hike is being co-led by Maria Stephens, a hiking leader in training who is assisting David Mong who is the leader of record. Note that this is a scouting trip for the leaders. Our plan is to have checked out this area the day before our hike but that is not guaranteed. Please come along and help us explore this new area. To ensure your safety and enable you to join us on this hike, you must register here on the AMC Activities Database website, complete the liability waiver form, and have your registration confirmed by this activity's AMC Chapter Leader. You will be notified by email when you are confirmed as a participant. ANYONE NOT RECEIVING A REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION FROM THIS ACTIVITY'S LEADER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE GROUP AT THE TRAILHEAD.AN RSVP ON MEETUP IS NOT CONSIDERED BEING REGISTERED FOR THIS ACTIVITY - THAT CAN ONLY BE ACCOMPLISHED HERE ON THE AMC ACTIVITY DATABASE WEB SITE. In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use. Route information - From the north end of Fishers Gap parking at mile 49.4, cross Skyline Drive and start down the fire road. Just after the chain, take a left onto the Skyland-Big Meadows Horse Trail (yellowblazed). In about 0.6-mile take the blue-blazed Rose River Loop Trail. Follow it past the 67-foot falls. Continue to the bridge, where you begin hiking up a steep, rocky section past beautiful cascades. At the fire road (yellow-blazed), turn right across bridge. Then continue uphill about one mile back to Skyline Drive. Moderate: Fitness level and/or past experience to sustain the activity at a moderate pace is required. Expect to be active up to 4-6 hours per day. Reasonable breaks in the action. Group size is limited to 10 including leaders. This trip is suitable for those with dogs which must be leashed at all times and should be comfortable around others in the group. ***There is no fee for the AMC hike; however, SNP will charge an entrance fee ($30 per vehicle).***

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

Maria Stephens grew up in Northern Massachusetts and continues to hike and kayak extensively throughout New England and upstate New York. She has hiked in China, Tibet, Scotland, Iceland, Norway, the Faroe and Orkney Islands, and Germany and has biked across the southern half of Ireland, from Shannon to Dublin. Maria is a member of AMC's NY/NJ, Maine, and Potomac chapters through which she leads both kayaking and hiking activities. She is working toward becoming a Maine Guide.
