Overview

Descend to enjoy views of South River Falls, 83' Falls, 3rd largest in SNP. South River Falls is located in the Central District of Shenandoah just north of the Swift Run Gap Entrance. The moderate 5-mile hike via the Falls Trail, AT and Tote Road begins at the South River Falls picnic area, next to the restrooms and is a dog-friendly hike. If warm enough we will be able to wade into the base of the Falls, flip flops or water shoes can be helpful here. This hike is being co-led by Maria Stephens, a hiking leader in training who is assisting David Mong who is the leader of record. To ensure your safety and enable you to join us on this hike, you must register here on the AMC Activities Database website, complete the liability waiver form, and have your registration confirmed by this activity's AMC Chapter Leader. You will be notified by email when you are confirmed as a participant. ANYONE NOT RECEIVING A REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION FROM THIS ACTIVITY'S LEADER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE GROUP AT THE TRAILHEAD.AN RSVP ON MEETUP IS NOT CONSIDERED BEING REGISTERED FOR THIS ACTIVITY - THAT CAN ONLY BE ACCOMPLISHED HERE ON THE AMC ACTIVITY DATABASE WEB SITE. In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use. Moderate: Fitness level and/or past experience to sustain the activity at a moderate pace is required. Expect to be active up to 4-6 hours per day. Reasonable breaks in the action. Elevation: The elevation gain for this hike is 1,914 feet. The trip involves hiking along some rocky terrain, a fire road, a very small section of the AT, and wading in the base of the Falls (if desired). Group size is limited to 10 including leaders. This trip is suitable for those with dogs which must be leashed at all times and should be comfortable around others in the group. ***There is no fee for the AMC hike; however, SNP will charge an entrance fee ($30 per vehicle).***

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

Maria Stephens grew up in Northern Massachusetts and continues to hike and kayak extensively throughout New England and upstate New York. She has hiked in China, Tibet, Scotland, Iceland, Norway, the Faroe and Orkney Islands, and Germany and has biked across the southern half of Ireland, from Shannon to Dublin. Maria is a member of AMC's NY/NJ, Maine, and Potomac chapters through which she leads both kayaking and hiking activities. She is working toward becoming a Maine Guide.
